Dear Lord; Happy Monday Father!
You know Father, it’s funny; some days I have to think, and pray, and ponder at length about what to focus on with our conversation, and then there are days like today where I have so many directions I’d like to go that I don’t know where to start!
Therefore Father, to stay somewhat with tradition I decided to start out the week by giving thanks to You for the weekend.
Shannon had back-to-back music performances this weekend, so for the most part Saturday and Sunday it was just the boys and I. The dogs had me up early Saturday morning, so after running them out I settled in on the couch with my coffee and was able to enjoy much of the Book of Deuteronomy without interruption. Fresh, dark coffee and the Word… What a wonderful way to wake up! 🙂
After the rest of the family was up, we all got dressed and were able to have lunch with Shannon before she had to head out to play viola at a wedding that afternoon. Other than a few little household chores, the boys and I spent the rest of Saturday baking fresh cinnamon-sugar swirl bread, relaxing, watching Doctor Who episodes and simply appreciating our time together. All in all, it was a nice, quiet day with my kids and I enjoyed it a great deal.
Sunday came, and Shannon was once again out the door first thing in the morning to another performance. This is the last Symphony Concert she’ll have for quite a while as they break during the summer, so other than the work she does with the quartet she belongs to her weekend schedule should slow down a bit now. Anyways, although the weather report looked quite threatening and the ominous sky appeared to support the forecast, we decided to risk getting rained on and headed out to Woodland Beach for a walk on the shore.
There’s always a wide variety of items to search through on Woodland Beach, but as we’d had a nasty thunderstorm come through the night before the sands were freshly filled with new treasures from the Delaware Bay. Bits of colorful sea glass, shells and rocks of all size, shape and color covered our path. Jonathan even brought a metal detector he’d received as a gift from his Grandfather a couple Christmases ago, and he and Aidan had a wonderful time chasing the “blips” and “bleeps” it made. While we won’t be able to retire on the “riches” they unearthed (a corroded cell-phone battery, and a couple rusted chunks of metal from the old pier), they had an absolutely fantastic time which in my book is priceless nonetheless.
While Aidan started out looking for bits of sea glass, Jonathan quickly got his attention when his metal detector started indicating it found something beneath the sand.
The boys had a great time digging in the sand chasing down the source of the signals the detector picked up.
After we’d combed the nearby stretch of beach quite thoroughly, the boys and I hopped back in the truck and headed off to take a look at a new stretch of shoreline we’d heard about from a friend of mine. We arrived at Port Mahon about a half-hour later; a virtually forgotten area that was obviously much more heavily used in years gone by. The road was barely there, and I was quite thankful for my SUV’s four-wheel-drive keeping us from being stuck in the sand and gravel. Rusting buffers and weathered, mussel-covered wooden piles lined the shore, now serving as lookouts for the wonderful variety of birds that swarmed the area. It was a photographer’s paradise, and although I could have spent hours there capturing the essence of this waylaid port, our stomachs reminded us that we were overdue for sustenance, and we were forced to head home. Thankfully however, this new discovery of nature is only around 25 minutes from our home, so we’re already planning a return trip soon.
One of the best parts of our visit to Port Mahon was the abundant wildlife, most obviously the shore birds that were all around. I took a number of shots of this little fellow, but this was my favorite.
These two looking out over the water brought the movie “Finding Nemo” to mind for some reason… Mine? Mine? 😉
Once back at the house, the boys cleaned up while I cooked up a “Breakfast for Dinner” feast for us. While we enjoyed that repast, we watched the live streaming message put on by Cross Point Church at crosspoint.tv. It was an excellent service, and a perfect way to close out the day’s activities.
Heavenly Father, thank You for yet another wonderful weekend with my family and friends. I feel truly Blessed to not only have this “bonding” time with my children, but to live nearby to so many wondrous examples of Your Abundance in nature. I love seeing the light in my boys’ eyes as they explore and examine the world You’ve given us, and being able to share my appreciation of Your Gifts with them. I pray that they grow knowing that wonder, and remember these times with Your Love in their hearts. Amen.

Dear Lord; Happy Thankful Thursday Father!
This evening Lord, I’ve decided to try something a little bit different for our Thankful Thursday conversation. Instead of focusing on one specific thing You’ve Blessed me with, I’m going to take a page from the idea behind “Multitudes on Mondays” as described in the book “One Thousand Gifts” written by Ann Voskamp, and make a list of some things I’ve been thankful for this week. I haven’t actually read the book, but a number of my fellow blogger friends have taken up this Monday tradition, and reading their posts it just seemed to fit very nicely with the concept of Thankful Thursday.
And there’s so much to list Father, so let me get started…
1. Smiles and hugs from my boys when I come home from work.
2. Dark, fresh, hot coffee in the morning.
3. Photowalks with the kids.
4. Living within 25 minutes of both a state forest and a quiet beach.
5. Feeling the spring breeze wafting over me as I watch the sun set beyond the trees.
6. Sitting at the firepit on our back deck and enjoying time with friends.
7. Holding my wife Shannon as she falls asleep.
8. Dark beer.
9. Cooking for my family and friends.
10. Reading the inspiring and encouraging posts from my fellow Christian Bloggers.
11. Curling up with the kids and watching TV together.
12. Having a job that continues to bring me new challenges and growth.
13. Pulsatile Nasal Irrigation (the only true defense I’ve found against allergies)
14. My son Jonathan continuing to be in remission.
15. Contact lenses.
Heavenly Father, thank You for these and all the other Blessings You bestow on us each day. You are indeed a wondrous Lord, and I lift my heart to You in joyous praise.
Amen.

Dear Lord; Happy Monday Father!
Today Father, as You know my thoughts and prayers were very much reaching towards Shannon as she began her new job. This transition has weighed heavily on her heart, but today went very well and I believe she’s feeling better about her decision now. Either way, thank You for watching over her today and every day, and guiding her along this path.
Mondays are generally busy days in my office Lord. And while it’s wonderful from a business perspective to be inundated with work, days like today can hold my focus to the point of excluding other important activities from the list… like eating.
I really meant to take a break and get some food today, but it just never happened. One project led into another until I looked at the clock and it was already after 4:00pm. Driving home, I had to pause for a few moments as I got a little light-headed… not a good sign for me. By the time I got to the house, I was tired, hungry, and even a bit on the grumpy side.
Very much like when I haven’t talked to You in a while Father… Spiritually malnourished.
With the crazy schedules we maintain these days, spending dedicated time with You can sometimes be slid aside by activities we feel are more pressing and immediate. The catch-22 is of course, that maintaining a tight personal relationship with You is just as vital to our well-being as is food to eat, or air to breathe. When we don’t spend that “meal time” with You each day, we suffer as a whole.
Nourish me Father… Feed my desperate spirit.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the Blessings You bestow on us each day. Please fill us with Your Presence, and sustain us through Your Word to lead the lives You Will for us. Amen.

Dear Lord; Happy Mother’s Day Father!
This evening Lord, I wanted to pay tribute if I may, to two wonderful mothers in my life; my mother who passed to Your Kingdom in 1995, and my lovely wife Shannon.
I was very Blessed Father, to have an excellent mother-figure in my life growing up. She was an intelligent, funny, caring woman and worked diligently to instill a sense of honor, understanding and perspective in my brother and I. Although she battled multiple forms of cancer for over 15 years, her focus was always on caring for and nurturing us. She was an amazing lady, and although I miss her a great deal I know I’ll see her again someday. 🙂
And Father, You Blessed me yet again with the wonderful lady You sent to be my wife. She has truly been the epitome of the “ideal mother” to our boys, and I couldn’t be more thankful for her. Today, we had a lovely Mother’s Day afternoon together. It started with a late lunch at the local Celtic Pub, then we rode out to Woodland Beach for a walk along the shore to gather sea glass for Shannon’s craft projects. I of course, carted along my camera and here are some of my favorites from the day:
Aidan spent the bulk of his time wading through the shallow water, finding rocks for his “collection”, and playing in the sand.
Jonathan started out with the idea of shooting photos as well, but the lure of playing in the sand and wading in the cool water quickly had me carrying his camera instead.
It was truly a lovely day out; around 75 degrees and sunny with a light breeze to keep the bugs away.
Shannon spent much of her time scouring the beach for bits of “sea glass” for her crafting projects.
We got the boys involved in the glass search as well, and they had a great time searching out these bits of treasure.
All in all Father, it was a lovely afternoon. As always, I thank You for the Blessings You bestow on us each day, and for the remarkable examples of motherhood You’ve placed in my life. Amen.

Dear Lord; Good evening Father!
Decisions; life is full of them. Every single day we’re called upon to make choices that impact our lives, and in many cases the lives of those around us. Some are small, simple ones such as what to have for lunch (although that never seems to be simple in my office for some reason…), and others, well, are not so simple. Either way, our lives are shaped by the decisions we make, and the paths we follow.
Case in point:
My wife Shannon is in the throes of a fairly significant decision; one that could have both short and long-term consequences, but also the potential for significant life-changing benefits. Like all choices of this kind, there are a number of back-and-forth arguments on both sides of the equation, making the correct path less than obvious. Sitting down with her and talking about it this evening, we hashed it out from nearly every side we could come up with, and in the end were left with a couple piles of “what if” scenarios. Finally, I asked her a simple question;
Have you prayed about it?
She indicated she had, and that during that discussion with You Father, You told her to follow her heart. While I believe she would have preferred a “Do this and everything will work out.” answer, You instead left her to determine what her heart truly is leading her to do, and the knowledge that You’re behind her when she does.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” – James 1:5-6 (NIV)
I think that a great many of Your answers to our prayers are like this Lord. We’ve become a “quick fix” society and want instant solutions to our problems, but You instead use these crossroads in our lives to help us to grow and to learn. Just because You don’t give us concrete answers to our pleas doesn’t mean You don’t have the solutions, simply that we need to pay closer attention to Your Truths and use those resources to do what we know to be right.
Heavenly Father, please guide and enlighten us to make the decisions that best serve Your Plan for us. Please help filter out the “noise” around us which can lead us astray, and allow us to focus on Your Voice so as to choose the best path forward. Amen.
