My sheep listen to my voice

Dear Lord; Happy Monday Father!  To begin with Lord, I want to thank You for another lovely weekend with my family and friends.  I was able to get caught up on quite a bit of housework, did a little cooking, had fun time with the kids and even went out on a great date night with Shannon.  All in all, a productive and relaxing couple of days away from work.  Thank You so much for that much-needed respite!

This morning Father, I was thinking about all the different ways You and I communicate.  Throughout my journey to You, I’ve found that the more “in-tune” I become with Your Presence, the more ways I see and hear Your Guidance in my everyday life.  I’ve come to rely on Your Voice more and more, and love finding Your influence in the world around me during the course of the day.

So today, I thought I’d run down some of the places and ways I find Your Messages to me each day.  Lets see…

  • Through reading and hearing Your Word; Whether it’s hearing verses quoted on the Christian Radio stations I listen to, reading passages in my Bible or finding quotes while searching the Internet, Your Book brings such amazing Guidance for all facets of my life.
  • Through Christian Music; Music gets into our soul in ways that not many other things can.  The Godly messages and themes present in Christian Music help keep me focused, uplifted and energized over the course of my day.
  • By reading and interacting with Christian Devotional Blogs and their authors; The blogs I read each day and the wonderful people I’ve met by doing so are an amazing resource and Blessing for me Lord.  They give me perspective, encouragement and an online fellowship that has been invaluable in my walk with You.
  • Through Prayer; Along with our conversations on this blog Father, prayer is my lifeline to You.  Whether silent or verbal, much of the guidance and direction I receive from You over the course of the day comes from our “prayer connection”.
  • By the words and actions of others; As I’ve written to you so often Lord, I see Your Love and Influence in the actions of others.  We’re surrounded by miracles every day, and the closer I walk to Christ’s footsteps the more obvious those wonders become to me.

Obviously Father, this isn’t a complete list by any means but these examples are what first came to my mind as I thought about our talks.  I love the deepening connection You and I are forming, and I crave for it to expand more each day.

Your Son phrased it perfectly when he said :

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.” – John 10:27-29

Heavenly Father, thank You so much for Your Loving Presence and Guidance in my life.  The more I open myself to You, the fuller and more complete my life becomes.  Amen.

Integrity in Broadcasting

Dear Lord; Good afternoon Father.  As You’re aware Lord, I’ve had something on my mind the last few days that’s been bothering me.  The funny thing is, my aggravations are regarding an event I’ve never really had much interest in; the Super Bowl.

I’ve never been a big football fan.  In fact, other than a couple of games I went to when I was in college, I’ve never even attended a live game… It just never really caught my interest.  This year really wasn’t much different, until I read a news story about a commercial that had been rejected by Fox Broadcasting Company for “delivering a religious message”.  As I’ve seen some pretty racy and scary Super Bowl commercials over the years, I went and sought out the “offending” segment :

Really??  This was deemed to contain too much religious doctrine??  Wow… I am so terribly sorry Father.  We’ve truly fallen from You as a society.  From a country that has “In God We Trust” on our currency, this truly makes no sense to me.  Fox certainly isn’t worried about offending viewers with the content on shows like “Family Guy” or Fox Sports’ Internet show “Cubed”, but they’re concerned that someone might take a reference to a Bible verse as an affront?

Fox issued a statement last week that stated :

“As a matter of company policy, Fox Broadcasting Company does not accept advertising from religious organizations for the purpose of advancing particular beliefs or practices. The Fixed Point Foundation was provided with our guidelines prior to their submission of storyboards for our review. Upon examination, the advertising submitted clearly delivers a religious message and as a result has been rejected.”

Ok, so the reason they’re airing commercials for the new movie “The Rite” is because it’s not from a religious organization?  Wow…  I’m completely at a loss on this one.

I realize that as a private company Fox has the right to choose what they do and don’t air on their network within FCC guidelines, but if a little of that “concern” about offending viewers were redirected to examining some of the programming and advertisements they do broadcast, I have a feeling the lineup would be far different than it is now.

Heavenly Father, thank You for letting me rant on about this today.  As always, You’re a wonderful listener.  Please fill our hearts and minds with Your Presence and Understanding, so that everyone can experience that Hope :

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16

Amen.

You shall not give false testimony…

Dear Lord; Happy Monday Father.  As always, I’d like to start today by thanking You for the Blessings You bestowed on me this past weekend.  While we had some disappointments in regards to plans that had been made, I did get to spend quite a bit of relaxed time with my family and some friends.  All in all, it was a quiet but happy couple of days and I thank You for that.

This morning Lord, I’d like to talk about honesty if I may.  It’s been a topic on my mind the last couple of days, as our disruption in plans this past weekend appears to have been the result of some deceit from someone Shannon and I had trusted.  We haven’t been able to confirm our suspicions yet, but it’s extremely likely that we’re correct in this case.  Either way, the situation got me thinking about the importance of truth in our lives in general, and how as Your Children we need to focus on it in our lives.

To begin with, I have to beg Your Forgiveness Lord.  When I started going over the whole subject in my head, I put myself and my actions in a “litmus test” against Your Law and I found myself lacking.  While I like to think of myself as an honest individual, if I truly subject myself to Your Absolutes I lie nearly every day in some fashion.  Whether it’s a “little white lie” to avoid hurting someone’s feelings, or telling my secretary that I’m out if someone I don’t want to hear from calls, they’re lies no matter how you slice it.  And when I expand that examination outward, it appears that we’re a dishonest society in general Lord.

Wow… What an intense realization for a Monday morning.

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”  – Exodus 20:16

Ah yes, the good old 9th Commandment.  Although we all know this one, we also all violate it at some point as well.  There are many other edicts about misrepresenting the truth in Your Book as well Lord, including :

“Do not steal.  Do not lie.  Do not deceive one another.”  – Leviticus 19:11

“The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” – Proverbs 12:22

“Those who walk righteously
and speak what is right,
who reject gain from extortion
and keep their hands from accepting bribes,
who stop their ears against plots of murder
and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—
they are the ones who will dwell on the heights,
whose refuge will be the mountain fortress.
Their bread will be supplied,
and water will not fail them.”  – Isaiah 33:15-16

Forgive us Lord, for in this respect we have lost our way.

Heavenly Father, please forgive us for our misdeeds.  Purge our fragile hearts of dishonesty, and help us focus on Your Guidance and Light as we go about each day, so that we may serve Your Will with honesty and Integrity.  Amen.

The Stuff that Dreams are Made of

Dear Lord; Wow Father… What a powerful morning You’ve presented me with.  I’m still not 100% sure what to make of it, but it’s got me excited nonetheless.

Now, I’ve never been a big nighttime “dreamer”.  In fact, I’m a chronic insomniac so when I do finally crash I very seldom remember what runs through my head the next morning.  Last night however, was a completely different experience for me.  Everything was so vivid, so real… When the alarm clock went off (and just FYI, I now realize that alarm clocks are one of Satan’s creations…LOL) I was truly shocked to find out that I had been asleep.  However, although I woke a bit disoriented I had an amazing sense of peace and of hope in my heart that hadn’t been there when I went to bed.  It was a wonderful feeling, but at the same time very confusing.  A little later, I was trying to make sense of it all while showering and You whispered to my heart :

“Expect something wonderful”

I’ve never put much stock in my dreams Father, but I’ve absolutely learned to be open to Your Voice.  This was such a powerful and unexpected experience for me, that I’m still having a hard time putting it into perspective.  Either way, no matter what the “something wonderful” turns out to be, I can’t thank You enough for the joyous feeling You left me with this morning.

On a different note Lord, I just had to share another piece of happiness with You.  Last night, Aidan and I finished reading the Book of Genesis in his new Action Bible.  He was beaming from the accomplishment, and went to bed with a smile on his face.  We also found and bought the DVD of the movie “The Ten Commandments” recently, and are planning to watch it this weekend so it’s a wonderful lead-in to reading the Book of Exodus.  Jonathan’s been reading Genesis as well, and I expect he’ll have it done in the next day or so as well.  Can You tell I’m proud of them Lord?  🙂

And we’re once again coming into a weekend Father.  Shannon and I are getting out for “date night” tonight, with the balance of the weekend being spent getting the Christmas decorations put away and putting our house back to some semblance of normality.  I’ll admit, I’m going to be sorry to see all the wonderful lights and embellishments get put away for another year, but it’s time.

Heavenly Father, I thank You so much for coming to me this morning.  The more I feel Your Presence with me, the more I know peace in my heart and go through the day focused on what truly matters.  Please guide me to better be Your Servant, and to shine Your Light to those around me so that they may know Your Love as I’ve come to.  Amen.

With Joyful Songs

Dear Lord; Happy Thursday Father!  I know I tend to talk about my boys quite a bit, but following up on yesterday’s conversation I just wanted to tell you about the ride in to school this morning.

Following a posting from another blogger about listening to Christian Music (Thanks so much Jenifer!) early in the week, I did a little digging online and found that while there were no nearby stations that carry that genre, there was a local repeater transmitter that rebroadcast an appropriate station.  It’s a weak signal to be sure, but it covers the area between my home and my office reasonably well, so I started listening to it on my way home last night.  It was still on in the car this morning on the way to drop the kids at school, and the difference was quickly picked up on by my youngest, Aidan.  I explained to him that this was a station that played songs which praised God, and he seemed pleased with that.  We then spent some time discussing what they had read in their Action Bibles the night before, but other than that it was an unusually quiet ride.  I pulled into the school and stopped to drop them off, and on his way out the door Aidan piped up “I like the music!” and ran inside to his class.

It’s funny sometimes what makes me smile Lord.

“Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.”  – Psalm 100:1-2

Amen.
